When you sign up for a hosting plan, one of the first decisions you face is which control panel to use. For most people, that comes down to two options: cPanel and Plesk. Both give you a browser-based interface for managing your website, email, databases and files, but they take different approaches and suit different types of users.
At UWH, we offer cPanel hosting and Plesk hosting across our plans. This post covers what sets them apart so you can make an informed choice before you commit.
cPanel has been the dominant control panel in shared and reseller hosting for decades. Its layout is familiar to a huge number of web professionals, which means tutorials, forum answers and third-party documentation are widely available. If you run into a problem, the chances of finding a solution online are high.
The interface is built around a single dashboard of icons grouped by category: files, databases, email, security and so on. It is not the most modern-looking panel, but it is predictable. Once you know where things are, you can move through tasks without much friction.
cPanel runs on Linux only. That is not a limitation for most hosting customers, but it is worth knowing if you are coming from a Windows background or need to run ASP.NET applications.
For resellers, cPanel pairs with WHM (Web Host Manager), a separate admin layer that lets you create and manage client accounts, set resource limits and configure packages. If you are planning to start a reseller hosting business, cPanel and WHM together give you a well-documented, widely understood setup.
Plesk takes a cleaner, more modern approach to the same set of tasks. The interface is organised around individual domains rather than a global list of tools, which can feel more logical if you are managing several sites at once.
One of Plesk’s practical advantages is platform support. Unlike cPanel, Plesk runs on both Linux and Windows servers. If your application requires a Windows environment, IIS or ASP.NET, Plesk is the panel that supports it.
Plesk also has strong built-in WordPress tooling. The WordPress Toolkit lets you install, clone, update and manage WordPress sites from within the panel, including staging environments and security scans. For agencies or developers managing multiple WordPress installations, this is a genuine time-saver. Our guide to what Plesk hosting involves covers this in more detail.
Plesk’s extension marketplace also lets you add functionality directly from the panel, covering everything from Git integration to additional security tools.
For day-to-day hosting tasks, the two panels cover the same ground. Both handle the following without any meaningful difference in capability:
If your needs are straightforward, either panel will serve you well. The differences become more relevant when you factor in your operating system requirements, the type of sites you are running or whether you need to manage multiple client accounts.
The honest answer is that neither panel is objectively better. The right choice depends on what you are doing with your hosting.
cPanel tends to suit people who are already familiar with it, who want access to the largest pool of community documentation, or who are setting up a reseller operation using WHM. The learning curve is low if you have used it before, and the ecosystem around it is mature.
Plesk tends to suit people who want a cleaner interface, who need Windows server support, or who are managing multiple WordPress sites and want the WordPress Toolkit to hand. It is also a strong choice if you prefer a more domain-centric way of working.
Tip: If you are migrating from another host, check which panel your current setup uses. Staying on the same panel reduces the work involved in moving files, databases and email configurations.
If you are genuinely undecided, cPanel is the safer default for most shared hosting customers, simply because the volume of available help and tutorials is larger. Plesk is worth choosing deliberately when one of its specific strengths applies to your situation.
Both panels are available across our hosting plans. Take a look at our cPanel hosting and Plesk hosting pages to see which plans are available, or get in touch if you want to talk through which option fits your setup.
